For years, Habitat has been growing into the notable company they are right now. It started during 1964 when Terence Conran, Caroline Conran, Philip Pollock, and Pagan Taylor founded Habitat with an idea of adding a radical and unique European touch to furniture shopping. The founding idea of Habitat is based on a mantra which says “What’s useful can be beautiful and what’s beautiful people can afford.” It is basically a positive reaction to the post-war gloom.

In the year 1971, the company started selling furniture in all of the stores in ‘take-away racks. This was the start of the modern way of selling furniture as people can now satisfy their need of a new furniture without the endless anticipation of getting a call from the delivery van.

In 1980 to 1981, they made a catalogue and introduced the sofa ranges and the concept perceiving ones living room as a colouring book that you need to fill with your own design concept using their products which puts the creative input in the consumer’s hands. With this ingenious idea, the company successfully collaborated with its consumers.

In 1998, they introduced the idea of bringing nature indoors with the way of Zen which comes with a strong Japanese influence seen on their products. With this, soapstone, slate and bamboo are given the domestic appeal.

In September 2014, the company launched its Design Reunion project as part of its 50th anniversary. They welcomed the different acclaimed designers such as Sarah Campbell, Tord Boontje, Shin Azumi, Calire Norcross, Aaron Probyn, and Simon Pengelly. Each of these designers will work with Creative Director Polly Dickens in developing a wide variety of statement pieces on furniture, lighting, and textiles. Each of the designers will also create an exclusive product for the company’s AW14 collection.

With the vast explorations and changes that the company made through the years, it is no shock that it is one of the biggest company to sell furniture online.
