Everyone in the horticultural world has heard of David Austin, the famed English rose grower. Although sadly no longer with us, the name and company lives on, and David Austin is still synonymous with quality grown roses direct from the UK.
My own favourite rose is the Lady of Shalott, a wonderful orangey pink blush rose that grows well if you place it in the sunnier part of your garden. But they don't just sell this so-called English rose type, they also sell others such as climbers, tea roses and more. But if it's English roses you're after then you can't really get much more special than a David Austin. They're not the cheapest - but you get what you pay for, and often bareroot roses are available with a discount code.
So, what are English roses exactly? English Roses have natural, shrubby growth which makes them ideal for both rose borders and combining with other plants in mixed borders. The more compact English Roses work well in rose beds, whilst taller varieties can be trained against a post and rail fence. Most varieties will perform surprisingly well in partial shade with at least four or five hours of good sun a day. English Roses as shrubs look best when planted in groups of three or more of the same variety. They will then grow together to form one dense shrub, which will provide a more continuous display and make a more definite statement in the border.
Recently, David Austin Roses have branched out into things other than just roses - garden furniture for example. They also sometimes sell hedging.
